Stargate Abilene pairs the Texas grid with ~360 MW of on-site gas

OpenAI's flagship Stargate campus went live in September 2025 with 200+ MW and is scaling toward 1.2 GW. Cleanview's tracking shows 29 gas turbines ordered and roughly 360 MW of behind-the-meter generation built by January 2026.

The first two Abilene buildings came online in September 2025, delivering over 200 MW of IT capacity to Oracle Cloud for OpenAI workloads. The full campus is planned at roughly 1.2 GW across eight buildings.

Power comes from the ERCOT grid — a mix of gas, wind and solar — supplemented by one of the largest behind-the-meter gas build-outs in the country: Crusoe ordered 10 GE Vernova turbines in December 2024 and 19 more in June 2025, finishing about 360 MW of on-site generation by January 2026. The companies describe the plant as backup for the data halls; Cleanview characterises the site as a hybrid grid-plus-gas facility.

Epoch AI's review of the seven announced Stargate sites found at least three plan on-site natural-gas plants, with the programme targeting more than 9 GW of capacity by 2029.

The site uses closed-loop cooling, which lowers direct water use but, as UC Riverside's Shaolei Ren notes, shifts the burden to electricity (and the water used to generate it).
