Questions
Do you upload my conversations?
No. Your browser opens the file and counts messages, words and timestamps on your device. The text never leaves it, and we never see it. A share link carries only the totals printed on your card.
How do you work out electricity and water?
Each answer starts from the provider's own per-prompt figure where one exists (OpenAI's 0.34 Wh for ChatGPT) and our labelled estimate where it doesn't (Claude). Longer answers, long pasted documents and images count for more. Water and carbon follow from the electricity. The How it works page has every number and source.
Why might my real footprint be higher?
Exports leave things out. Thinking models write long hidden drafts that mostly don't appear in the file, web searches and agents run extra steps, and training the models isn't counted at all. Our totals are a floor, not a ceiling.
Can I use a work or school account?
If your workspace lets you export your data, yes. Some ChatGPT Team and Enterprise workspaces turn exports off; ask your admin.
What about Gemini, Copilot or Meta AI?
Not yet. Their exports come in different shapes; ChatGPT and Claude are first because they're the ones most people use daily.
My export is huge. Will it work?
Usually. We read only conversations.json from inside the zip, one conversation at a time, so a multi-gigabyte export with years of images is fine on a computer. Very large files can be slow on a phone.
